Get more confidence in the gym

Increase your gym confidence

Feel uncomfortable in the gym because you don’t really feel like you know what to do?

Maybe you’ve been away from the gym for a little break and you feel out of the motions?

Whatever your reason for being afraid of the gym, I’ve got a few tips to help you get into the swing of things.

Tips to increase gym confidence

1. Keep it simple!

I get it, you’ve seen hundreds of complicated exercises on Twitter, and Instagram. But, it’s important for you to keep things incredibly simple. Instead of going in thinking you’ve got to do complex supersets and cool looking push-ups with a medicine ball etc. Stick to the following exercises:

  1. Push-ups / Machine chest press / bench press
  2. Squats / Leg press machine
  3. Shoulder press
  4. Sit-ups / crunches
  5. Seated row

Oh, and before I forget, do the cardio which you enjoy the most (cycling, running, swimming etc.)

2. Don’t go too often

Start off simple and ease yourself into it. If you’ve never been to the gym before, you probably want to go once or twice a week. If you’ve just fallen off the wagon, you might be able to push it to 2-3 times per week. When you feel you’re happy with the number of times you’re going to the gym and you feel like you’ve hit that number consistently for a couple of weeks, you can consider increasing the number of visits in the gym.

3. Remember you’re there for you

I’m sure you’ve heard it before and it’s a little bit cliche, but, it’s true. Everybody that goes to the gym is there for themselves. It’s worth remembering when you go to the gym that everybody is focused on their own exercises, their own progression and their own image in the mirror.

4. Hire a Personal Trainer / Coach

If you still don’t feel completely comfortable easing yourself into it, maybe you should consider hiring a personal trainer or online coach to nudge you in the right direction. If you decide to do this, make sure you choose a personal trainer that you feel comfortable with. After all, if you don’t feel comfortable, you’re less likely to stick to your plan and you won’t get the right kind of motivation to keep going.
